One of the things I love most about retro computing is discovering something that my 13-year-old self would have considered completely impossible.
When I first used an Atari 800XL, getting software meant inserting a cartridge, loading a cassette, or putting a floppy disk into a drive and waiting.
There certainly wasn’t a network.
There wasn’t Wi-Fi.
And there definitely wasn’t a server somewhere on my network containing an entire library of Atari software.
Forty years later, that’s exactly what I have.
Thanks to FujiNet and TNFS, my Atari can connect over Wi-Fi to a server containing disk images, utilities, games, demos, and other software. Even better, that server doesn’t have to belong to somebody else.
I can run my own.
And that’s exactly what I decided to do.
First, What Exactly Is TNFS?
TNFS stands for The Network File System. It is a lightweight network protocol designed with retro computers in mind and is an important part of the FujiNet ecosystem.
Think of it as a network-accessible disk cabinet for your Atari.
Normally, an Atari might access software from a floppy disk in an Atari 1050 or XF551 disk drive. With FujiNet, disk images can instead be stored on an SD card or retrieved across a network.
Public TNFS servers take this idea even further.
Connect your FujiNet to the internet, enter the address of a TNFS server, and suddenly your Atari can browse files stored on a computer potentially hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.
That alone is remarkable.
But it got me thinking:
Why not run one myself?
Why Build a Personal TNFS Server?
I’ll admit that part of the answer is simply:
Because I could.
That’s half the fun of retro computing.
But there are some genuinely useful reasons for running your own TNFS server.
I wanted a central place where I could keep my Atari disk images and access them from my real Atari hardware without constantly moving SD cards around.
Instead of asking:
“Which SD card did I put that disk image on?”
I could simply put everything on the server.
Then any FujiNet-equipped Atari on my network could access it.
There was another advantage too.
The server could stay running all the time.
My Atari could be turned off for a week, a month, or longer. When I eventually sat down in front of it again and powered it up, the software library would still be waiting.
It essentially gave my Atari its own little network file server.
That’s a sentence I never expected to say about an Atari 800XL.
The Basic Idea
The setup is actually surprisingly simple.
You need three main pieces:
An Atari computer.
In my case, that’s my Atari 800XL, although FujiNet supports a growing collection of vintage computer platforms.
A FujiNet device.
This provides the bridge between the Atari’s SIO interface and the modern network.
A computer running the TNFS server software.
This doesn’t need to be a powerful machine.
That’s important.
We’re serving files to an Atari running at roughly 1.79 MHz. We aren’t exactly hosting Netflix here.
An old PC, Raspberry Pi, Linux machine, home server, or other always-on system can be more than enough for the job.
Creating the Atari Library
Once the TNFS server is running, the fun part begins.
I created a directory for my Atari software and began organizing my collection.
There are plenty of ways you could structure this:
/Atari
/Games
/Applications
/Utilities
/Demos
/Programming
/DOS
/Disk-Magazines
You could get much more elaborate if you wanted.
Games could be organized alphabetically. You could create directories for commercial software, public-domain software, homebrew releases, or particular publishers.
That’s one of the advantages of running your own server.
It’s your library.
You organize it in whatever way makes sense to you.
Over time, I can continue adding software without touching the Atari or FujiNet itself.
I simply copy another disk image onto the server.
The next time I access the directory from FujiNet, it’s there.
The First Connection
This was the part I was waiting for.
I turned on the Atari.
FujiNet connected to Wi-Fi.
I opened the FujiNet configuration interface and entered the address of my TNFS server.
Connect.
And there it was.
My directory.
On an Atari.
That moment was considerably more satisfying than it probably had any right to be.
Here was a computer designed when home networking was practically unheard of, browsing files stored on another computer across my network.
I selected a disk image.
Mounted it into one of FujiNet’s virtual disk slots.
Booted the Atari.
A few moments later, the software was running.
No physical floppy.
No 1050 disk drive.
No swapping disks.
No SD card shuffling.
The Atari had simply retrieved its disk from a server.
This Is Where FujiNet Becomes Something Bigger
This experiment helped me appreciate FujiNet in a completely different way.
It’s tempting to think of FujiNet as a modern replacement for an Atari disk drive.
And it certainly does that job extremely well.
But that description dramatically undersells what FujiNet actually represents.
FujiNet gives these old computers something they were never designed to have:
a connection to the modern world.
The Atari itself remains an Atari.
The 6502 processor hasn’t changed.
The ANTIC and GTIA chips haven’t changed.
The keyboard, graphics modes, BASIC environment, and wonderfully distinctive Atari sounds are still exactly what they were decades ago.
But the machine’s relationship with the world around it has changed completely.
My Atari 800XL is no longer an isolated computer sitting on a desk.
It’s a networked computer.
From Floppy Cabinet to Network Storage
There’s also something amusing about comparing this setup with how I stored Atari software decades ago.
Back then, you might have had boxes filled with floppy disks.
Every disk had a handwritten label.
Maybe you numbered them.
Maybe you had an index.
Maybe you had absolutely no organizational system whatsoever and spent twenty minutes looking for the disk containing that one game you suddenly wanted to play.
Now I can maintain an organized digital library on a server.
The Atari can browse that library itself.
It’s essentially the 21st-century version of that giant box of Atari disks.
Except this box has Wi-Fi.
The Preservation Angle
There’s another reason I think projects like this matter.
Our original Atari hardware is now more than forty years old.
So are many of the floppy disks.
Magnetic media won’t last forever. Disk drives fail. Belts deteriorate. Capacitors age. Mechanical components wear out.
Preserving the software is becoming increasingly important.
Disk images allow us to preserve the contents of those original disks, while FujiNet gives us a practical way to continue using them on original hardware.
A TNFS server adds another piece to that preservation puzzle.
Instead of having a collection of ATR files scattered across computers, USB drives, and SD cards, they can be maintained as a centralized library.
Back up that library regularly and suddenly your collection is much easier to protect.
That’s not just convenient.
It’s preservation.
Could You Make It Available on the Internet?
This is where things get even more interesting.
A TNFS server doesn’t necessarily have to remain inside your home network.
With the appropriate network configuration, a server can potentially be made accessible over the internet.
That’s how the public TNFS servers available to FujiNet users work.
Suddenly, your little Atari software library could potentially be accessed by another Atari hundreds of kilometres away.
Think about that for a moment.
Two Atari computers manufactured in the early 1980s can effectively share files over the internet.
Try explaining that to somebody in 1983.
A 40-Year-Old Computer That Refuses to Retire
This is why I’m so fascinated by FujiNet.
It isn’t merely about convenience.
It changes what it means to own and use a vintage computer.
My Atari isn’t sitting under glass.
It isn’t a museum piece.
I turn it on.
I use it.
I explore software.
I experiment with hardware.
I connect it to servers.
And occasionally I find myself doing something with it that would have sounded like science fiction when the computer was new.
Running my own TNFS server was one of those moments.
There’s something wonderfully absurd about having a modern server sitting on one side of the room and an Atari 800XL sitting on the other, happily communicating with each other across Wi-Fi.
One machine represents where personal computing came from.
The other represents where it went.
And FujiNet provides the bridge between them.
This Is What Keeps Atari Alive
Forty years ago, nobody designing the Atari 8-bit computers could have predicted FujiNet.
They couldn’t have predicted Wi-Fi, modern home networks, enormous online software archives, inexpensive microcontrollers, or communities of enthusiasts collaborating around the world to create new hardware for their machines.
Yet here we are.
People are still writing Atari software.
They’re still designing hardware.
They’re still repairing machines.
They’re still discovering things these computers can do.
And now we’re giving them network servers.
That’s why I don’t really think of my Atari collection as a collection of obsolete computers.
They’re old computers.
There’s a difference.
Obsolete means something no longer has a useful purpose.
My Atari still has one.
It entertains me.
It teaches me.
It gives me something to experiment with.
And most importantly, after more than four decades, it still manages to surprise me.
My TNFS server is just the latest example.
Not bad for a computer that’s over 40 years old.
Where Do We Go From Here?
Setting up the TNFS server has given me a few more ideas.
I’d like to spend some time organizing my Atari software library properly. I’d also like to explore more of FujiNet’s networking capabilities and see just how far I can push the connection between my vintage Atari hardware and my modern network.
And, of course, there’s always another project waiting.
That’s half the fun.
In a future Atari Addict article, I’ll get more technical and walk through the actual process of setting up a TNFS server step by step, including the server software, directory structure, FujiNet configuration, and network settings.
For now, though, I’m going to enjoy something that still feels slightly impossible:
Turning on my Atari 800XL…
connecting to my server…
and loading a disk over Wi-Fi.
